Freya EX Pictures

Mark,

I wanted to thank you for all the hard work and effort you went to in the setup of your picture booth for the L.A. Fun Fly. The pictures of my EX are outstanding to say the least, very clear and sharp with all the angles and close up shots.

Hirobo Freya EX

Here is a picture of my Hirobo Freya EX, the second of my Freya's.
To see all the pictures Mark took at the L.A. Fun Fly, click the photo below. I'll add a few thoughts about how this helicopter is flying as time permits, or someone has a specific question I can answer. So far in the last week I have flown 12 flights breaking in the new YS-61, it won't be long before it will be smoother and really ready to go.

Eagle SST Freya EX

Chris,

It really is just an Eagle, there are a few minor upgrades and some parts that have been completely designed from scratch. The canopy has the newer Freya lines and tucks nicely in the back section. The DTDS T/R gear box has been revised and incorporates minor differences which promotes control an precision.

Freya EX

Its a very nice heli and you must be proud. It certainly is beautiful. Anyways, I didn't see it at the fun fly. Were you there all three days? I was there and participated in the inverted record attempt, pilot #14. I flew a Raptor. I wish I got to see this heli in person because it looks really good on the computer, it looks like art.

Freya at LA

I'm very pleased with the Freya EX, it's still needs breakin time, I hope to finish a few more gallons this weekend.

Most of the San Diego people were down on the south side, not too far from the RunRyder booth. I did most of my flying from station 4 so I could skew my flight path to get lots of room. We were there all three days, but you might remember me as Pilot 122 with the Padre cap and most of the raffle ticket wins. Thanks for the kind words..

Freya EX Engines

I found the 10T pinion just didn't have the correct gear mesh with the 95T Delrin main gear which was the right gearing for the YS-61 that I was running. I'd had the YS already and the 80-90 class of motors weren't quite on the market yet, so I took the easy route at the time. Last night I dropped the motor and replace the 95T main gear that was missing about 30 teeth and put the 12T pinion back on the clutch bell. I'll be ordering the replacement motor and muffler next week to bring the EX up to the specs it was designed for. Stay tuned....

EX flying again

I'm so pleased I had to post something!

I finally got around to buying an OS-91 to put in the EX, I was able to get a few tanks through it today. Before I describe the tremendous power the 91 has even when it's terribly rich, let me say I had forgotten how well this helicopter will hover! I have ordered the Sullivan Dynatron starter to help with the starting chore, my old reliable starter wouldn't even budge this engine. I was able to max everything out and got a +11.5 to -10 pitch window, I don't know if there is any more pitch possible without binding the SSR-V head. It will be fun massaging the curves to keep those 680 mm 205 gram FAI V-blades from overspeeding. I went back to the factory spec 12/95 gearing, with my head speed low at 1600 right now for breakin, it's so quiet you'd think it was electric.

Parts

The parts are available from Altech, give Jeff Green a call at MRC. The frames are designed to support CCPM, honestly, this heli is so smooth and responsive I'm not going to go the CCPM route. On a side note, one of my friends in our club suggested the canopy should be removed at all times in the pits for their viewing pleasure.

Dave

What video were you watching? I haven't been able to get any tapes or VCD of FAI F3C except for the 2002 demonstration schedule Mr Sensui did. The Freya EX flys very close to 90 mph with the 91 motor and a crash would be costly. In the mean time, I just keep putting in the fuel, and I fly until it's too dark to see.

The Video? Oh... completely amateur, taken at a local field. From what I could see, it was doing a low inverted backward flyby when it seemed the blade struck the boom at around 6 feet off the deck.

I can only assume what caused the incident. However, it is easier to cause a mid-air boomstrike using the SSR-V head unlike the more traditional below flybar rotorhead design like those of used on the standard Freya.

The diagrams

Send an email to jeffg@modelrectifier.com and ask Jeff if he has english versions of the exploded parts diagrams for the EX in a pdf format. If I can remember to take my manual to the office, I can get it scanned and email them to you.
