I hear ya there.....

But, with Peter NOT as a contestant, I would think he has some capacity with the judging. What we DON'T see is the scorecards....how good was the documentation done up, how close to the real deal was the heli, static presentation, flight characteristics and realism.

Note that it isn't always the most complex machine in the competition that wins anymore. That was part of the rules committee objectives when they reviewed the judging parameters.

Would be interesting to see the judges scorecards (with names withheld). Or who the judges were for that event.

Congrats to ALL the contestants that entered the event. For those folks that has not attempted to do a competition scale machine, you really cannot appreciate the work and dedication it takes to enter the contests.

Super Scale results

We had a GREAT turnout for the Super-Scale event this year, Five new models were entered and there were a few others that SHOULD have entered, but didn't for one reason or another. To address a few of the questions that have been asked in this thread:

The three judges were Jim Davey, Jon Tanner and Paul Scott (me).

The scoring awarded one-third of the points for Static and two-thirds Flying. This split is a little bit historical because we don't have a "Builder-of-the-model" rule at Circumgyration. We want to encourage FLYING of these beauties, not pretty paper-weights.

Dr.Tim's Cobra ranked very high on static. That's a fantastic machine. The others were pretty impressive too. Remember that in Static, its "fidelity to documentation" that counts. (If you have the MOST FANTASTIC cockpit and it doesn't match your doc photo, it might score ZERO.)

We had a bonus of 50 flight-points for Helis with fly-barless heads This gave three of the models a big head-start .

We also had a 25 point bonus for "Autorotation from altitude" that could be included as one of the seven elective flight maneuvers. The two pilots flying fly-barred heads elected to take advantage of that and significantly raised their scores.

The manditory maneuvers were 1) a 10 second hover and clearing turns, 2) a 45 degree climbout to 30 feet, 3) a 45 degree approach from 30 feet and traslational landing.

We flew three rounds and discarded the score of the lowest scoring round. Some of the pilots didn't fly all three for various reasons.

When the final STATIC and FLIGHT scores were talleyed, only ONE point seperated FIRST from SECOND and only 13 points (out of over 700) separated FIRST from THIRD.

As Mark's photos show, we had a blast and plan to have a bigger one next year.

Regards,
...paul

Absolutely fabulous!.. Glad to see great turn out at the Circumgyration. It's ashamed to see some great scalers didn't get what they deserved.. Great work nevertheless. There is always next year right.. Thanks for the photos Mark!.

What a Blast! The Competition was Perfect! Everyone scored were they should have. I had to back out of the contest with a boo boo in my part .... Don't ask! Gonzalo flew real smooth and the 4 blade head looked great in the wind! Len mount belched smoke out of his Turbine Kiowa all over the Photographers .... That was Fun to watch My hat was worn one day .... too windy so I took it off and saved it for a calmer day .... This event was a Blast!!

Mark,

It was nice to finally meet you. When my son and I spoke to you, you were taking photos at the far end of the hovering area around 10AM. You got a good shot of me, my son, and my granddaughter gawking at the San Jose Police chopper. Thanks for running a great forum.

All I have to say is wow!!!
I was blown away by Dr. Tim's Cobra. Someday I to hope to get to that level of modeling.
I can understand about some of the grumbling about judging, but hey if it looks great but doesnt fly well those ar ethe brakes.
I want to say thanks to:
Dr. Tim "This guy's Cobra belongs in a museum!"
Mark Ryder
S.J. PD those guys were a wonderful adition to this years event
Stanford Students who brought out their UAV project
Dave Neves for working the BBQ, and just being a cool guy!
All the members at Bayside R/C Club who did a great job at putting this event together.
These events take a lot of planning and dedication. Every member I spoke to was friendly and ready to answer questions and make this hobby a great family affair. The club members are some of the friendliest I have known and can't say enough good things about them.
Mystery Guy who brought his Cal Berkley Yamaha RMax. Man I wish I had $80 K to blow on a toy like that!!!

How did the crappy R-22 get first place? There was no detail to it at all. It comes like that in the kit. I mean WTF. That 412 should have taken first place. The judges must have been working for century

Everyone has to understand that Documentation and Flying were large parts of the score. Dave Neves simply Out Flew Everyone! He did some real Clean flying and his Autos were spot on! I received very little flying score before I backed out due to a few probs that I over looked. There was actually a lot of detail in Dave's ship .... Mind you there were some awsome ships but, If your Docs are week expect a low static! With that said .. The score were accurate! It was a Great event and I can't wait till next year!
