9 vs 8 tooth

I noticed I am running a 9 tooth main compared to your 8. Do you think this could cause extra torque in my setup and thus tax the gyro a little more?

No - in fact, you should have less torque during most flight manouvers since your blade pitch will be less for the same lift...

Because I learned with the stock transmitter, my DX7/AR6100 program basically duplicates the stock transmitter program...

What kind of prop adapter did you use for #3 bird? Also, how did you keep the brushless main/heat sink from interfering with the front servo arm?

By the way, thanks for all of your contribution to the forums. It has been a big help to me.

On #3, the tail prop is a press-on - no tail adaptor. When you press the prop on, just be careful to keep the prop straight to the shaft so you get a secure fit. I also put a drop of CA glue on the prop and shaft (on the outside) to help keep it on. Never had a prop fall off yet... sheared a bunch off onhard crashes though.

Regarding the full wrap-around heatsink, I just cut a small section off with a hacksaw and cleaned it up with file. You only need to remove about 10mm.

Did you alter the TB-9 settings at all?

I am having trouble getting the tail to stay in control.
It either bounces back and forth or makes a larger tail swing when I apply rudder. Was it difficult to find the perfect gain settings? It could just be my E-flite gyro.

No. I did not modify the TB9 settings (there really aren't any that make a difference).

Make sure that you do not have BECs from both ESCs working at the same time. You need to disable one by removing the center pin (I always disable the tail ESC - no good reason why).

Hopefully you are using remote gain with your setup. If so, just leave your radio in the [GYRO SENS] menu and do a series of test hovers. Increase the rate setting 5% at a time, do test hovers and check to see if the tail starts to hunt. When it does, back it down 5% and redo increasing 1% at a time.

When you are happy in hover, redo the exercise in forward flight to see if you want to make any more fine tuning to the %.

Remember, numbers above 50% are HH mode, numbers below 50% are rate mode. You should be around 86%...

Also, with my setup, Rate 0 applies to NORM flight mode, and Rate 1 will apply to the ST-1 and ST-2 flight modes.

Let us know if this resolves the problem.

I just can not get this brushless setup to work with any reliability. If I nose right and let off the stick, the tail stops nice. If I nose left and let off the stick, the nose resets to where it was before I gave nose left input. I have tested this setup with GY401, 2100T, and G90. The best results have come with the G90 interestingly enough. I was really hoping to make this work with the Logictech gyro, but it has produced the worst results. Prior to going brushless, I could fly this thing pretty well. Now I get nervous turning in a hover.

Where am I going wrong?

1. Nose is drifting right slightly while hovering

2. Gyro works nice one way but not the other

3. Using your DX-7 settings (have fiddled with dx7 settings with no good results)

4. Nose is really bad with higher quality gyros

What happens when you bench test your setup?

ie. unplug the main motor, power up, move throttle to about 1/2, rotate the heli right, rotate the heli left...

Tail counteracts nose as it should. It is just when I fly, its as if the gyro OVERCORRECTS on nose left turns.

Bench;
1. Nosing right, tail lowers power
2. Nosing left, tail increases power
3. No rudder input, tail pushes mildly to the left

Removed remote gain and did manual gain on the gyro, same results.
Should the tail rotor be moving when the bird is on the ground and the stick is not moved? As it is now, once I arm the tail (Rudder D/R switch) the tail is pushing mildly to the left with no throttle or rudder input. Is that normal?

That is normal for me. The effect goes away as you spool up the main rotor...

With a more sophisticated ESC, you can make it go away.

Can you get your gyro to get both sides of a proper gain setup?

Can you post a picture of your tail setup?

Gain is straight in hover and forward flight (like the middle picture.) Left nose/right tail input gets bouncy after letting off stick (about 3 or 4 bounces to reset nose.) Right nose/ left tail input is fine. Its just the one side I can't seem to work out.

My tail setup is exactly as your #3 Feigao/Feigao bird. I am rotating between 3 gyros. I am going to try out the 401 again tonight.
